John was born in Greenock and educated in Edinburgh. He studied painting in London, Guildford and Hull.
Since completing his degree course in Hull in 1974, John has had many one man and group exhibitions and his work is included in many public and private collections of Modern Art.
In 1977, John was appointed Fellow in Fine Art at the University of Nottignham and moved to Lincolnshire in 1979.
Over the last few years, John's work as a modern figurative painter has developed a style that best expresses his interest in painting and the mysteries of life. At the beginning of the new millenium, John feels free to refer to many of the painting movements that have dominated the last hundred years.
He now runs Riverbank Gallery and Studios in Spalding with his partner Helen Webber and divides his time between part-time teaching and painting.

Landscape is the main theme of Helen's work. She uses a variety of media; oils, acrylic, oil pastel, collage, screen printing and watercolours.
She is particularly interested in "recreating" surface detail and texture and often takes a "close up" view of her subjects, experimenting with different techniques to achieve the desired effect.
She has shown in many mixed and solo shows, and has paintings in both private and public collections.
Helen now runs Riverbank Gallery and Studios with her partner John Gray and divides her time between part-time teaching and painting.
